The Stapleless Stapler

So I turned in my promotion item for one of my classes. I put an imprint of my company on the stapler and decided to say how it was green and good for business because the organization I was representing was the American Marketing Association. I felt it was a good idea because in the business world there is a lot of paper used and if you can save a staple each time it may help your business. Besides the fact the the staplers are around 2 to 3 dollars if you buy them online, they are green and good for the environment. The best part about it was that Ms. Groover, my teacher, used it to staple everyone’s paper together before she gave us back our grade on the assignment. I felt very good about this. Now everyone will know there is such thing as a stapleless stapler.

New York Times International Afghanistan

I read in the New York Times about how President Obama is planning to take troops out of Afghanistan. He decided to send more forces for now but is planning on gradually taking troops out of Afghanistan. In the article is speaks of him speaking to the United States Military Academy but not to the public. I think this is a PR stunt because if they are going to leak all of this information to a reporter, what is the difference. All of the information that he would be telling the United States or the World is told in this article. I think the fact that they let the information already out that they should be up front with the country and tell them what they are planning. He said he plans to have almost all of the troops out by 2011. His plan is to turn this war over to the Kabul government. I think he is using this media outlet to let much of the nation know exactly what his plan is without actaully telling them. I feel this is also somewhat innaccurate because I feel that most Americans know that even if Kabul “takes over the war,” the United States will still play a very large role in things happening globally. To try and say everything will be turned over to the Kabul government is just crazy.

International PR and Iran

I read in a news article that Iran was going to be authorizing more nuclear power plants in their country. There will be 10 nuclear power plants built. There is a lot of controversy over this because many countries have said things because of Iran’s culture. For the most part, they do not speak of how a nuclear run country cuts greenhouse emmissions by a lot. I agree that it is not a comfortable feeling but people base their prejudice solely on their culture. I read this on CNN’s website. Even though there is a treaty that gives Iran the right to produce civil nuclear power, they are catching heat from many countries around the world.

What I am Thankful For

I am thankful for the fact that I will be able to spend Thanksgiving with my family. All of my immediate family will be in town and I will get to see my sister who lives in California. I am lucky that my parents live so close because I can make it home for breaks to see them. I am thankful that I only have 9 days of school left before I graduate. I can not wait to be done. I am also thankful that I found a job and do not have to job hunt anymore.

Diner’s World Tour

I attended the Diner’s World Tour for the Diversity Calender event in my international PR class on Tuesday, Nov. 16th. I was actually very excited to go to this event because I love trying all different types of food. I was actually enlightened when I was not put in an akward position like I was at the International Coffee Hour. When I walked in to this event, it seemed to be all students. I could not believe there were no “international” people at this event. I ate something called Tonkatsu which was an Asian styled pork chop, German potato salad, Korean squash and Baklava for desert. I did not like the Korean squash at all. I tried it because I was hoping it would be different than American squash. Overall I enjoyed the experience of trying different foods because it is not every day you try something international. I would recommend this event to anyone in the future and I hope they continue to hold this event at Georgia Southern University.

Diversity on Campus

When I walk around campus I see people from all over the world. I have been here for 5 years and never saw such a diverse selection of students until now. Everywhere I go on campus or near Georgia Southern’s campus is full of different people. They are always holding multicultural events all over campus but I feel there is still such a silo effect all around GSU. I feel like people tend to stick in their little cliques and fail to meet others. I noticed this at first when I went to the International Coffee Hour. Now, everywhere I go on campus I see African American people sitting with other African American people as well as other races as well. I think that some campus organization needs to be formed to start uniting people from all over the world. I think that if people put as much effort into fraternities and sororities as they could in another organization like this, we could have people unite all over the campus.

My International Coffee Hour Experience

On Friday, October, 31 I attended the International Coffee Hour at the Williams Center. This Friday happened to be Halloween and was very interesting. The group was made up of students obviously but there was a large Asian population at this event. There were some people from the Middle East as well as other areas of the world. There were about the same number of African American people and Caucasians. I believe there was a very good representation of the Asian culture due to the fact that one of the girls was wearing a Pokémon Halloween costume. I think that most people in our society view cartoon caricatures like that and think of Asian people. I had no idea that this was an event that took place on Georgia Southern’s campus. I would definitely attend this event again. I love to meet new people and experience new things and this was definitely new to me. I think one good comparison to this event would be some sort of sporting event. You get a large volume of people from all over the world to come to an event where they can interact with each other. It felt awkward being a minority for a moment. It made me feel very uncomfortable being the minority because I did not feel welcome. I think the event was successful in some aspects and unsuccessful in others. They succeeded in getting all of the people from different places together but I did not feel welcome and I saw many other people in my position that did not feel comfortable as well. It seemed like the people that attended this event on a regular basis were not really interested in meeting that many new people. I consider myself a very outgoing person and I was never once approached by anyone else. Overall I enjoyed the event and would go back just to see if I can connect with some of these people from other places. I feel that it would be a good learning experience meeting people from different cultures.

School Spirit

I am not involved in any school spirit organizations. In fact, I am not involved in school spirit in the least bit. I may have a few Georgia Southern shirts but I never really participate in anything other than tailgating before football games. I wish I went to a bigger university, one that had over “2000″ seats for a football game. I do not like how it feels to “clicky” when you go to the games. You are crammed in the stadium or sitting on the grass. I have never really been into GSU sports like I have other schools. I wish I could say I would come back to visit for games but I probably won’t ever come back to Statesboro for anything. So in conclusion, I have no school spirit. Maybe when the school expands to play in the SEC or some better schools and decides to build a new stadium I will come back and represent. Until then, I’ll be waiting.

my favorite book by Dan Brown

I would have to say my favorite book is the Davinci Code. The author of this book is Dan Brown. I watched the movie a few times over the past few years and enjoyed it very much. I have always heard that the book was amazing so I tried it out one day. I am not a big reader or anything but I was bored one afternoon and said what the hell. A lot of people say that books are much better than movies. I was actually thankful that I saw the movie first because it made it easier to visualize what was happening in the book. The book is long but I could not put it down. That may be the first book in history that I actually liked. It’s kind of sad, but it is what it is. I really enjoyed the Davinci Code and would recommend anyone who is into that sort of stuff to read it. I can’t wait to read the other book Angels and Demons.

I’ve always wondered why when people use Twitter it called leaving a tweet. Why wouldn’t it be twittering or twitting or leaving a twit. It doesn’t make sense. It’s changing vowels for no reason. If it’s called a tweet, why wouldn’t it be called tweeter. I wish someone would explain this to me with an actual food explanation. It should be a twit!!
